Policy Statement:
The safety of the children in my care is paramount and I will take every measure I can to protect them from hurting themselves. However sometimes accidents and illness do occur and the following procedure documents how such situations will be dealt with.
Procedure:
In order to prevent unnecessary accidents or injuries in my setting I will ensure that all equipment and resources are suitable for the age and stage of development of each child.
In the event of a child falling ill or having an accident or injury, firstly, I will comfort and reassure the child.
I will assess the extent of their injuries or illness and if necessary call for medical support/ambulance.
I will carry out any first aid procedures that are necessary, that I have been trained to do; all first aid training will be kept up to date.
Once the child is calm I will contact the parent/carer to inform them of the incident and if necessary to ask them to return to care for their child/meet at the hospital.
I will require written permission to seek emergency treatment.
I will require written permission to administer any medication before giving it to the child.
I will require written permission that I may give contact details to my husband to be used in the event of an emergency.
A record will be kept of when medication is administrated.
All medicines will be stored safely, in the original bottle with the child’s name clearly visible.
Small, minor accidents e.g. small grazes, that if, in my trained opinion do not need the parent/carer to be informed immediately, will be recorded in the accident book and the parents/carer will be informed on collection of the child.
If an accident does occur to a child in my care, it will be recorded in the accident book with a date and time together with a brief explanation of the accident/injury occurred and any treatment given. The parent/carer will be asked to sign and date this to confirm that they have been informed.
I will require emergency contact numbers from parent/carers.
In the event of an emergency in the home such as a fire I will lead the children to the green in front of my house. Children will be made aware of this procedure when they first come to my setting and will be reminded periodically.
